History Solway was founded in 1988, and is today one of the UK's leading manufacturers of fresh Salads and Sandwiches with an annual turnover in excess of £50 million. Continuous investment in the latest technology and state of the art machinery, has ensured that the company retains its market leading formula of supplying exciting and innovative products.
Solway was established in Corby by four directors, John Bladon, John Bennett, Neil Adnitt and Nick Ellison. All four directors had long established careers within the chilled food industry, and in the late 1980's saw a gap in the market, and started Solway to manufacture Salads. A year later in 1989, they ventured into Sandwich production.
The successful growth and expansion of Solway continued over the last 10 years and now operates from three factories at Corby. Early in 1999, the fourth factoryopened in Manton Wood, Nottinghamshire to produce Sandwiches and Sushi.
1999/2000 is our best year yet, with the turnover expected to be in excess of £50 million and this is just the start! Solway will continue to grow into the next century.

Press Release
Press Release - 7 February 2000
Northern acquires stake in Solway Foods From C. O. Thomas on behalf of Solway Foods and Napier Brown Holdings Limited
We are pleased to announce that Northern Foods has today acquired 40% of the share capital of Solway Foods Holdings Limited. This move is in recognition of Solway's impressive record of growth and excellent relationships, most notably with Tesco - who are fully supportive of this partnership. The remaining shares continue to be held by the Ridgewell Family, 51 % (the owners of Napier Brown Holdings Limited) and the senior management, 9%. I will remain as Managing Director and, together with the current directors, we will continue to develop the business. Mathew Gribbins will join the Board on behalf of Northern Foods. Mathew has considerable experience of food retailing and his input will prove very valuable to Solway.
We believe this partnership with Northern Foods will strengthen our position in the Chilled Convenience Food sector of the
retail market and will enable us to successfully expand our business in the coming years.
C O Thomas
